Wild Encounters: San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park - Overview

Located 35 miles north of the San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Wild Animal Park is a wildlife sanctuary where man and animal enjoy rare and close encounters. On this 1,800-acre park you can stretch out a hand to feed a giraffe, even be daring enough to rub noses with an endangered rhino or look deep into the eyes of a California Condor.

The Park houses 3000 wild and endangered animals belonging to 400 species from Africa, Asia, Europe, North and South America, and Australia. Its Journey into Africa is one of the most popular attractions. Trek through the Heart of Africa, a 32-acre safari adventure into the dense forests and grassy savannas of Africa past herds of elephants, giraffe, zebra, and other endangered species.

The park is also noted for its California condor breeding program, the most successful program in the country.

Wild Encounters: San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park - Itinerary

You will be picked up from your hotel in San Diego and taken in an air-conditioned coach for a sightseeing tour of the San Diego Wild Animal Park, located 35 miles north of the San Diego Zoo.

Arrive at the Park and spend the next few hours enjoying rare close encounters with some of the wildest and most endangered animals on the planet. Its open-range enclosures are popular and you can view rhinos, giraffes, elephants, Cape Buffalos among others.

The Journey into Africa is immensely popular and consists of a tram journey that brings you face to face with the wildlife of Africa.

Aside from the tram, walking is the best way to see Wild Animal Park. The 1.75-mile Kilimanjaro trail, one of many, takes you to the big animals—lions, tigers, and elephants. See animals wander freely in surroundings that simulate their natural habitat.

Walk through the Heart of Africa and see the Nairobi Village where you can shop, eat and enjoy interacting with the animals and birds there.

Keep your camera handy so that you don’t miss out on photographs of a lifetime.

At the end of the tour you will be dropped back at your hotel in San Diego.

Since a visit to the park takes most of the day, you might want to bring water, snacks, and sunscreen. The many trails within the Park can only be reached on foot, so comfortable walking shoes are advisable. Don’t forget your camera.

How to Cancel
